Inventor of CMOS Sensor Develops Quanta Image Sensor - Breakthrough for photography

Next generation of ultra sensitive image sensor finally developed by the inventor of CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor Thayer professor Eric Fossum.

Digital camera of today’s world uses CMOS sensor made by Eric

University professor and inventor of CMOS image sensor worked for more than 3 years along with his student Jiaju Ma, for the development of pixels for Quanta Image Sensor (QIS).

The pixels are very smaller than the current generation of CMOS sensors. Quanta Image Sensor (QIS) pixels are designed to capture only single photon. By increasing the number of pixels on same sensor size the camera / module will capture more light and details compared to the current generation of sensors.

Fossum Said:

We deliberately wanted to invent it in way that is almost completely compatible with today’s CMOS image sensor technology so it’s easy for industry to adopt it. Engineering its size is a step in that direction.

The question was how to build this in a current, commercially accessible, not-too-expensive CMOS process … Being able to measure one electron is fundamental from a scientific point of view and we were able to do it without a ‘Manhattan Project’.

Expected date of arrival is not know yet but Quanta Image Sensor (QIS) will give a new dimension to digital photography.

Sony-FF-NEX-image1According to a recent email we got from a anonymous emailer, Sony will announce Affordable fullframe camera within the next 6 months, Possibly before Q2 of 2016. The affordable fullframe camera is a part of Sony strategy to completely overtake the Fullframe camera market.

Sony affordable fullframe mirrorless patent

We have already published Sony Affordable fullframe mirrorless camera patent on October 2013.

Sony putting less attention towards the development of APS-C sensors based camera from past 1 year and only concentrating on fullframe business. We really like the effort made by Sony to bring High-end core specification under reasonable price tag. But at the same time we also want to say that Sony must put attention towards the development of SLT series and APS-C based mirrorless + SLT camera.

Sony Hybrid Microlens Patent

Sony patented a Hybrid Micro lens, the micro-lens of the latest Sony sensor is composed to two sub-pixels, one pixel is dedicated for auto-focusing and the other pixel is light sensitive.

The main objective of Sony is to remove the light blocking pixels from the sensor. If all the micro-lenses of the sensor are photosensitive than the camera will give fast contrast AF and neat High ISO images.

Description, self-interpretation of the patent literature

  • Patent Publication No. 2015-153975
    • Published 2015.8.24
    • Filing date 2014.2.18
  • Sony patents
    • Microlens is formed over two or more pixels
    • The first pixel for focus detection
    • The second pixel imaging
    • Micro lenses as viewed from the first pixel are inclined
    • The optical axis of the microlens is in a second pixel
